As you may have read, Disaster Accountability Project recently released a report on the accessibility, modernity, and comprehensiveness of emergency plans in 22 of the most hurricane-vulnerable Louisiana parishes. The information collected for the report was compiled by Disaster Accountability Project volunteers.  We found many plans were not available to the public and others had not been updated since before Hurricane Katrina.

In an effort to make sure communities across the United States are prepared for all types of hazards and emergencies, the Disaster Accountability Project is looking for volunteer “Disaster Accountability Monitors” to request their community emergency plans.  Sometimes asking questions and bringing attention to these issues is all that is needed to generate community-wide conversations and ensure plans are up-to-date.  Even President Obama called for the public to know their community emergency plans in a speech at the beginning of Hurricane Season.

If you are interested in serving as a Disaster Accountability Monitor, and we at Disaster Accountability Project hope you are, please sign up here.
